Section 5: Research, knowledge management and rapid learning
Scenario 50: Checking the source and date of a claim
Level: Beginner · Tools: ChatGPT Search; Sources panel and source links
Who and in what situation
Can, an editor on a fictional municipal communications team, verifies claims about the market, institutional statements and dates in a draft before publication.
How it is done today
Can searches for each claim separately, copies the results into the document and manually compares publication dates.
How to do it with AI
- In a new conversation, select View all tools > Search or type / and use the Search option. [90]
- Provide the draft; for each claim, request a supporting sentence, source, date and a label of “supports, partially supports or does not support.”
- Open the Sources section and read the quotation in the relevant paragraph of the source. [90]
- If it appears incorrect, search again using Search the web, specifying an institution, date or source type. [90]
- Include only sources you have opened and checked in the text for publication.
Example prompt
Review every verifiable claim in the following draft: {draft_text}. Each row should include the claim, a supporting authoritative source, the relevant sentence, the publication or update date and an assessment. If the source does not support the claim, say “unsupported.” Do not fabricate quotations or numbers.Evidence and real-world example
No company case study was found; the basis is ChatGPT Search’s workflow for opening sources and checking dates, along with its warning about incorrect or fabricated sources. [90] [91]
Points to consider
Sources may be incomplete, outdated or incorrect; for important information, open the source directly and consult an authoritative source. [90] ChatGPT may give incorrect answers or fabricated quotations in a confident tone. [91] Search access may depend on the plan and workspace settings. [90]
